nokia 5310 looks to me as though they also made the keys a bit bigger.
That's the first dumbphone from VZW that actually looks good to me.
The screen on this one is huge, the e-ink is neat, and the buttons aren't so cramped. So far, so good. The included ringtones suck though, but it seems easy to swap them out via sd micro.
Regarding that keyboard, it would seem to me to be more likely that it's one "large" E-ink screen with a bezel attached to form what appear as 40 individual screens/keys. Aligning and connecting 40 individual screens sounds a bit problematic.
What mystifies me is why they've put this keyboard technology on such a limited phone, rather than a smartphone?
I was looking at it the other day when I was looking at getting a new phone, but I didn't get nokia 5310 xpressmusic because I can't stand having my standard number keys so small for dialing. Overall, though, it's a much nicer idea than using touch screens for everything.
All I use my phone for is text messaging and calls. Good thinking, too bad it isn't on ATnT
A co-worker just got one of these last night and she likes it a lot. I was pretty impressed with the e-ink keys.
The overall surface area of the displays are far less than that of the Kindle, and it would cost much more to make one large display than several small ones. I think Amazon might be whoring out the whole thing a bit, though.
They should adapt this for full sized keyboards, I'm guessing some multilingual people would appreciate having adjustable key languages, or typing classes would like blanked out keyboards for testing key-memory, but without the cost of dozens of tiny LCDs.
You're thinking the Optimus Maximus keyboard from Art Lebedev, and it's so expensive because it actually uses tiny OLED displays, not LCD. An e-ink one would be really cool.
I really like the keyboard. I'm a simple person and these look nice.
Woah, that's actually really neat! I'd get one Cell phones if I was signed with Verizon and if it wasn't a dumbphone D:

If that is true, this nokia 5310 is a possibility for me when it is time for my upgrade.

That's an interesting comment above, "Now let's all ponder how Samsung can offer us almost 40 little screens worth of e-ink plus a functional phone for only $80 while Amazon wants to charge hundreds of dollars for the Kindle." I like thought-provoking comments. Is that $80 unlocked or with subscription? Anyway, E-ink is getting cheaper and E-book-like readers will someday be under a Benjamin, perhaps using other technology (color w/fast refresh but low or no power drain).
Boy, watching the video, it sure appears to be backlit, although I didn't know if that was possible with E-ink (maybe an illusion due to AGC or something). Anyone know for sure? Backlighting ups the power-consumption, obviously, but could sure make up for the poor-contrast of regular E-ink displays (or at least dazzle the eye).
That is awesome, I love companies using E-ink. I would buy this if I didn't have an iPhone
nokia 5310 xpressmusic is very cool. i'd LOVE to see this in an Android device - or, dare I hope, an iPhone. imagine being able to change the keycaps programatically - so they reflect whatever the current app needs for input.
I like this idea. The flicker thing doesn't seem like it would be all that annoying.

Thats actually a pretty nifty idea, also, how about laptops =D.

I have an Alias 1, and you get used to the keyboard fast. I actually am pretty fast on it. I can't believe they actually made a sequel. I didn't think the first one was all that great. Oh well, I'm not getting the new one, instead in getting the iPhone this summer.
pretty cool Cell phones. a kid in my routing and switching class today had one. hopefully this starts to be more common. it would be nice to be able to have a full keyboard on a smaller phone.

I was tempted to buy the Alias 1 but hated the keyboard, so small.
